Necklace Layering

Layering looks effortless on other people and somehow turns into a knot on you — it usually isn’t the necklaces, it’s the lengths, and once those are right everything else falls into place

Start With Lengths, Not Pieces

Think in three tiers — a short chain sits high on the collarbone at around 40cm, a mid-length lands where a pendant naturally rests at around 45cm, and a long chain drops below that, 50cm and beyond

One piece per tier — the most common mistake is two chains at almost the same length, which overlap all day, rub against each other and read as an accident rather than a choice, so a visible gap between each layer is the whole trick

Pick One Hero

Every stack needs a lead, usually a pendant — something with a stone that catches light when you move — while the other chains are supporting cast: finer, quieter, there to frame the hero rather than argue with it

Two pendants at similar heights will always fight, so if you want two, put real distance between them: one short and delicate, one long and heavier

Vary The Weight, Not Just The Length

Three identical chains at three lengths still look flat, so mix the gauge — a fine cable chain next to a slightly more substantial one creates the texture that makes a stack look considered

The Tangle Problem, Solved

1. Fasten the shortest chain first, so it sits closest to your neck
2. Clasp longer chains behind it, letting each one hang free
3. Give the longest layer a slightly heavier pendant — weight keeps it from riding up into the others
4. If you wear three or more every day, a layering clasp is genuinely worth it
5. Store them hanging, not in a pile — most tangling happens in the box, not on you

Everyday Versus Occasion

Two layers is the everyday sweet spot — enough to look deliberate, quiet enough for the office or a long humid day when you’d rather not think about your neckline — and the third goes on when you want it noticed
